TUSCALOOSA, Alabama --
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox has expressed concern that as other national news breaks, people will lose sight of the devastation in Tuscaloosa after tornadoes swept through the area on April 27, 2011,
according to CBS News.
"It's great that we were able to kill Osama bin Laden, but what about today?" Maddox asked CBS. "Thousands of people tonight in Tuscaloosa will go to bed without homes. Please don't forget us because we have to deal with today, and today we've got a lot of people hurt."
At least 40 people have been reported dead as a result of the Tuscaloosa tornado and more than 1,000 injured.
Gov. Robert Bentley said that the state will provide assistance to local governments to pay for debris removal for 30 days, according to CBS.
